The right licence for you

The CMRAO issues the following types of licences:

  1. General Licence (for individuals)
  2. Transitional General Licence (for individuals)
  3. Limited Licence (for individuals)
  4. Condominium Management Provider Licence (for companies)

For individuals, the type of licence you can get depending on your level of experience and education in condo management. The fourth type of licence is for condo management firms.

General Licence

You should apply for a General Licence if, on November 1, 2017: 

  • You have provided condominium management services for two or more years (2,920 hours) within the previous five years; and
  • You have completed the education requirements for a General Licence.

One or more of the following would satisfy the education requirements for General Licence:

  • Successful completion of four courses developed by the Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario (ACMO):

(i)    Condominium Law
(ii)    Physical Building Management
(iii)   Financial Planning for Condominium Managers
(iv)   Condominium Administration and Human Relations

  • Successful completion of ACMO’s four challenge exams (which can substitute course completion).
  • Successful completion of ACMO’s Registered Condominium Manager (RCM) exam.

General Licence application instructions

Transitional General Licence

You should apply for a Transitional General Licence if, on November 1, 2017: 

  • You have provided condominium management services for two or more years (2,920 hours) within the previous five years; and
  • You have not completed the education requirements for a General Licence.

A Transitional General Licence will allow you to do the same work as a General Licence. You can apply for a General Licence:

  • After you have successfully completed the required education the four ACMO courses; or
  • You have five or more years experience in providing condominium management services, successfully completed ACMO’s four Challenge exams (which can substitute course completion).

The last day you can apply for a Transitional General Licence is January 29, 2018. You can renew your Transitional General Licence annually for up to three years from the time the licence was issued.

Limited Licence

You should apply for a Limited Licence if, on November 1, 2017, you have provided condo management services for less than two years (2,920 hours) within the previous five years. There are currently no education requirements for a Limited Licence.  Learn more about the conditions of a Limited Licence.

Under the conditions of a Limited Licence, you:
•    Must be supervised by a General Licensee or a Transitional General Licensee
•    Cannot enter into a contract or an agreement without prior approval of a Supervising Licensee
•    Cannot manage, control, or disburse more than $500 of general funds without prior approval of a Supervising Licensee
•    Cannot manage, control or disburse reserve funds
•    Cannot sign status certificates

Condominium Management Provider Licence

Firms and businesses that provide condo management services to condo corporations should apply for a Condominium Management Provider Licence. The firm can be a corporation, partnership, sole proprietor, one-person shop, association or other organization or entity.
